It’s summer sale time – everything must go! So, welcome back to SSNIPpets, the pet project by Rupprecht Podszun, featuring small but significant updates and lighthearted news. This edition focuses on cartels and spotlights a key event on the calendar of Germany’s competition law capital!
Düsseldorf Open
We’re as thrilled as the Serbian mixed air pistol team winning Olympic gold. Why? Because the 7th Open Düsseldorf Doctoral Seminar in Antitrust Law, also known as the Düsseldorf Open, is happening on September 2-3, 2024! This is your last chance to register – click here for all the details and to secure a spot.
For two days, escape the solitude of doctoral research. Instead of distracting yourself with ironing or podcasts, join fellow PhD candidates in Düsseldorf and take a break from your thesis with others in the same boat. The agenda includes engaging talks, top-tier catering from Düsseldorf law firms, a case study with Judge Gerhard Klumpe, insights from legal experts, the Herbert Smith Freehills PhD Award presentation, and two special guests: first, Carel Maske, Senior Attorney at Microsoft, who oversees competition and digital regulation in the EMEA region.
Secondly, we come to a beloved tradition at the Düsseldorf Open: the fireside chat—minus the actual fireplace. In past editions, esteemed figures like Martijn Snoep, Konrad Ost, Linsey McCallum, Jörg Nothdurft, and Andreas Schwab have shared insights in front of a virtual crackling fire on YouTube. This year’s guest is none other than Fiona Scott Morton, one of the world’s leading economists and political advisors. The Yale professor (an alma mater she shares with my colleague Christian Kersting, who is eagerly anticipating the event) will be fielding questions from participants. Based on past experience, it’s bound to be a thought-provoking session. If we were the Serbian mixed shooting team… well, you get the idea. If you’re a young academic and interested in joining, email ikartr(at)hhu.de. Note that most of the seminar will be conducted in German…
